Port Alberni Waterfront
‘Sheryl’s
Common Ground FREE STORE’ Is Back
Port Alberni is
on the map for having the first ever Common Ground Free Store.
Now It’s Back
Common Ground Free Stores are an alternative to throwing your
items away. Other alternatives are to give them to organizations in our
community to support their efforts. The Port Alberni
community has shown their approval for an alterative to throwing perfectly
good items into the landfill. To date thousands of items have been both
dropped off and picked up for FREE from Sheryl's Common Ground Free
Store’s old location.
Russ and Sheryl have brought back the Free Store in a much
larger way this time. With over 5000 square feet of floor space on Bute St., between 4th
and 5th Ave.,
The front end looks like a normal store with clothing racks and shelves.
The big difference here is that everything is free. The couches, chairs,
refrigerators, clothes, dishes, you name it, and if it shows up there, it
is free to take with you.
The first Common Ground Free Store was such a success that
they were already looking for more floor space as the 1200 square feet was
too small. When the building sold, Russ and Sheryl tried everything to keep
the store open for the transition to a larger space, but the new owners
wanted the space for their business. As with a commercial sale, the building
was sold empty, and therefore, the Free Store was no more.
“It is a concept some people
have a problem with. How can it all be free, they ask me? The common ground
free store is about keeping good items away from the landfill,” Russ
explains over and over to everyone. “People come here to bring items,
some people come here to get items, and some do both. Sheryl and I are
facilitating a need through the free store and that is we should NEVER take
it to the landfill....NEVER!”
We wish you the best of luck Russ and Sheryl.

Industrial Hemp - What Does It Mean To The World?
Consider a few of the scientific facts about hemp:
Hemp does not require herbicides or pesticides. Hemp can be
grown in a wide range of latitudes and altitudes. Hemp replenishes soil
with nutrients and nitrogen, making it an excellent rotational crop. Hemp
controls erosion of the topsoil. Hemp converts CO2 to oxygen better than
trees. Hemp produces more oil than any other crop, which can be used for
food, fuel, lubricants, soaps, etc. Hemp nut is a very healthy food, being
the highest protein crop (after soybean) and high in omega oils. Hemp can
be used for making plastics, including car parts. Hemp makes paper more
efficiently and ecologically than wood, requiring no chemical glues. Hemp
can be used to make fiberboard. Hemp can be used to make paint. Hemp can
produce bio-fuel and ethanol (better than corn). Hemp can be grown more
than once per year. Hemp fibers can make very strong rope and textiles.

Vancouver Island’s West Coast
with miles and miles of sandy beaches is a big draw for the yearly tourism
seasons. Sport fishing, swimming, surfing, camping, rain forests and the
famous West Coast Trail draws a million or so people to these locations
yearly.
Markets here are far more expensive to buy than the Alberni
Valley, but if you have a million
to spend on your vacation house, this is the area you want to be in.

The Recycle Wars– Someone May Be Thinking this time
A few months back the recycling in the Alberni
Valley went belly up and
floated out to the Pacific. The collection depot in Port
Alberni goes straight to the landfill. Now this is
something that takes great brains. Use your gas to go down to the depot,
thinking you are helping the environment, taking the time to do it, and
only to find out it just goes to the landfill anyways.
Today seems to be a different. Yes, it still goes to the dump
but now recycling companies are scrambling over each other to get in.
Sunbird is already in talks as to ‘how to benefit the city
talks’, while joint ventures that are private are seriously looking
at moving in and do not care what any companies do with the CRD or the City
of Port Alberni.
If there is that much profit in recycling, then it goes to
show why big companies are vying for position. As a capitalist myself, it
does not make any sense to give any company money for recycling. Politics
are not helping in this problem by giving tax dollars to a company that is
sure to make a profit anyways. Why would any government subsidize a company
that is sure to make a profit?
I say dump the talks about
recycling and allow as many companies in to do the recycling, which we will
end up with a winner. Not only will the taxpayer getting a service, but
they will not have to pay for it with government subsidies, as the big
companies battle it out as to who gets your recyclables. Forget the
bureaucracy, let capitalism rise to help people to stop throwing things in
the landfills. This just proves why there is a need for a Free Store
everywhere.

What
a wonderful Idea. Good for them. Guess the writer should have checked out
